Grammar - Collective Nouns Flashcards
Collective Nouns
Collective nouns are nouns that can mean one or several. For example, in English, “fish” can be pieces of, one, or several fish. This is the same in Arabic.
Singular Collective (“one fish”)
For collective nouns in Arabic, if you want it to mean one of that thing (e.g. one apple), add an “a” sound at the end.
apple (collective)
تفاح (tufaeh)

تفاحه (tufaeha)
fish (collective)
سمك (samak)
one fish
سمكه (samaka)
Pieces of material
For materials (things that can be used to make something from, like wood or cloth), it is the same. Add an “a” sound at the end to mean a piece of that thing.
wood (collective)
خشب (chashab) –> ask me about “ch” pronunciation
a piece of wood
خشبه (chasaba)
