What is a noun?

What is a common noun, and a proper noun?

A

A person, place, thing, or idea (e.g: Dumbledore).

Thing, person, animal, quality (softness or love) idea (justice or peace) and behaviour (a smile).

Common nouns refer to people or places in general (non-specific)
Proper nouns refer to specific people or things (e.g. Bronte, Albert, God).

What is a verb?

A

An action word. A verb carries the idea of action or being in a sentence.

Used to describe actions, state, process or experience.

What is an adjective ?

What are the two main purposes of nouns?

A

An adjective describes or modifies a noun.

  1. Classifies and describes the qualities of nouns (strong boy, worst boy, deadest boy)
  2. Precedes and modifies nouns to make them general or specific and how much/many (a boy, the boy, one boy, many boys, a few boys, no boys)

What is an adverb ?

List 5 types of adverbs and give examples

A

Describes a verb, adjective or other adverbs.
Often (but not always) end in -ly. Can add intensity (completely strange, kind of terrible, really bad)

  1. Adverbs of manner (sitting *quietly)
  2. Adverbs of place (don’t run *over there)
  3. Adverbs of frequency (don’t eat *before swimming)
  4. Adverbs of time (Star Trek is *now old)
  5. Adverbs of purpose (He bikes to school to reduce his carbon footprint)

What is a pronoun

A

A noun that takes the place of a noun that has already been described, is already known or has already been mentioned. (e.g: her, me, you, she, they who, everybody, yourself, each other, I) or these buttons.
