What is a clause?
A group of words that has a subject + a predicate (verb). Eg. He came.
What is a phrase?
A group of related words that do not have a subject & a predicate.
Name the claus and the phrase in this example: He is laughing at the joker.
The clause is, “He is laughing” and the phrase is,
“at the joker”.
Name the grammar parts to this sentence:
I will meet him in the office.
“I will meet him” is the clause (I is the subject
“in the office” is the phrase
What are the two major clauses?
main (or independent) clause and subordinate (or dependant) clause.
What is the difference between a main clause and a subordinate clause?
A main clause expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a complete sentence. A subordinate clause depends on another clause to complete the thought. Eg. He is buying a shirt which looks very nice. “He is buying a shirt.” is the main clause. “which looks very nice” is the subordinate clause.
