What are the eight main word classes?
- nouns
- adjectives

Within grammar there are how many main word classes?
Eight.
Nouns.
Naming words. There are four types: - concrete - abstract - proper - collective.
Adjectives.
Describe nouns and sometimes pronouns.
Verbs.
Doing words.
Verbs can be:
- dynamic (relate to actions)
- stative (express a state of being and though processes).
They can be:
- active ‘john hit the ball’
- passive ‘the ball was it (by john)’.
Verbs which support the main verbs are:
- primary auxiliary verbs (these alter the tense, can, have, is)
- modal auxiliary verbs (9) ‘can, could, will, would, must, may, might, shall, should and ought’
- ‘do’ is a dummy auxiliary.
Adverbs.
Describes verbs and sometimes adjectives and other adverbs too. Usually end in ‘ly’.
Pronouns.
Take the place of nouns ‘you, they, him, me, it’.
Conjunctions.
Connecting words.
Prepositions.
Define the relationship between words in time, space and direction. ‘Before, underneath and through’.
Determiners.
Give specific kinds of informations about a noun.
