Rules for Commas
A
- Use to separate two classes connected by conjunctions: and, but, or, not, for
Ex - Bob was usually a quiet man, but his screamed upon entering the room.
If the classes are short, you may omit the comma.
Ex - his hat was on but his pants were off. - Used to separate elements in a list or series - Ex. Next to the man was a bassoon, a water balloon, and a raccoon.
- Use two separate introductory phrases - ex. When he felt sad, Bob picked up the bassoon and blew
- Use a comma if the adjectives could also be separated by “and”
Ex. The nimble, fat raccoon began to poke at the water balloon.
