  1. Declarative - statement eg “I am tired”
  2. Imperative - command eg “clean the kitchen”
  3. Interrogative - questions eg “did you eat the last biscuit?”
  4. Exclamation - bursts of emotion
    eg “oh no!”

What is a simple sentence?

A

Contains 1 main verb and expresses only 1 idea
eg I walked to the shop

What is a compound sentence?

A

Expresses more than 1 idea and includes more than 1 main verb whilst also containing either a comma or a conjunction
eg I want to watch TV and eat pizza

What is a complex sentence?

A

Contains at least 1 subordinate clause
eg don’t talk whilst you’re eating
Or
Gary is standing at the front, asking for a complex sentience

What is a fragment sentence?

A

One that is pretending to be a sentence with a capital letter and a full stop but has no verb
eg “Interesting.” , “Golly gosh!”

What is a clause?

A

It is based on a verb
Main clause - stands alone and makes sense
Subordinate clause - needs the main clause to make sense (gives extra info)
Coordinating conjunction - where 2 or more independent clauses are combined (using and, or, but, nor, so, yet etc)

What is a phrase?

A

Had a head word, the class of the head word dictates what type of phrase it is
E.g the green door
The head word is “door” so it is a noun phrase
