Grammar Flashcards
What’s the difference between a clause and a phrase?
Phrase – a group of related words that lacks either a subject or a predicate (verb)
ex) a lovely bride
ex) howling at the moon
Clause – a group of words that contains BOTH a subject and a predicate (verb)
What is the difference between a clause and a phrase?
Independent clause – expresses a complete idea; stands alone as a sentence
ex) The lovely bride glides down the aisle.
Dependent clause – does not express a complete idea; a subordinating conjunction (dependent marker) changes the clause to a fragment (i.e. although, while, since, when, as, because…)
ex) As the lovely bride glides down the aisle.
Examples of Independent and Dependent markers
Independent markers: Also, consequently, furthermore, however, moreover, nevertheless –> completing thought
Dependent markers: after, although, as, because, before, even if, even though, if, in order to, since, though, unless, until, whatever, when, whenever, whether, and while –> feels incomplete
