The groups correspond to the person closer to the thing:

Group one is for the first person, that is, I, the speaker: Este livro (aqui) – This book (here). Now, this “aqui” is redundant; I wrote it to make matters clear.

Group two is for the second person, that is, you, whom I am talking to: Esse livro (aí) – That book (there). Again, “aí” is redundant. Notice how English distinguishes these two groups: this/that.

Group three is for the third person, that is, they, near neither me or you: Aquele livro (lá) – That book (over there). Again, “lá” is redundant. Notice how English doesn’t distinguish groups two and three.
