Person, place, or thing
An easy way to determine if a
word is a noun—this works most of the time—is to add an article to it: the boy; an apple, a book

Pronoun
Words that replace nouns

It may take the place of the name of the person, place, or thing

Preposition
Links nouns or pronouns to other words used in the sentence that tells something about another word in the sentence

What the subject is or does, or is doing. It can also express a state of being
Action
- run, jump, sit, ask, talk
State of being
- am, are, is, was, were
Helping Verb
help the main verb express tenses or times. There are 23 helping verbs
- am, are, be - been, being - can, could - did, do, does - had, has - have, is, - may, might, - must, shall, - should, was, - were, will, - would
Parts of Speech Example
The boy yelled, “Help!” and he saw a brave dog quickly run to the rescue.

Alliteration
The repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of all or most of the words in a phrase or sentence

Hyperbole
Using outrageous exaggeration to make a point

Idiom
An expression that takes on a new meaning

A comparison between two unlike things
