Common noun
General, not the particular, name of a person, place, or thing (e.g nurse, hospital, syringe)
Noun
Word or group of words that names a person, place, thing, or idea
Proper noun
The official name of a person, place, or thing. Capitalized.
Abstract noun
The name of a quality or a general idea (democracy, persistence)
Collective noun
Represent a group of persons, animals, or things (family, flock, furniture)
Pronoun
A word that takes the place of a noun (he, she, them, their, etc)
Adjective
Word, phrase, or clause that modifies a noun or pronoun. Verbs, nouns and pronouns can act as adjectives.
A type of verb that form that functions as adjective is a “particle” which usually ends in -ing or -ed
Verb
A word or phrase that is used to express an action or a state of being
Linking verbs
Am, is, are, was, were, being, been, look, sound, smell, feel, taste, appear, seem, become, grow, turn, prove, remain
Adverb
Word, phrase, or clause that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb (very, quite, quickly, etc)
Preposition
Word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to some other word in the sentence (as, at, among, between, in, of, on, over, to, until, upon, with, etc)
Conjunction
Word that join words, phrases, or clauses.
The nurse asked to work the early shift, but her request was denied
Correlative conjunction
Work in pairs to join words or phrases (neither, nor; either, or)
Interjection
Word or phrase that expresses emotion or exclamation (yikes, whew, wow, etc)
Clause
A group of words that has subject and a predicate
