As for choosing are/is, the rule is that the verb after as well as must agree with the noun preceding it, which is John in this case, because the emphasis is on John, not his friends.

Answer: 4
Not 3 because it does not sound correct. unless the sentence is “The boys persisted and continued playing soccer despite the presence of obstacles.
