Q

間に あいだ に

A
  1. Doing with intent while~

This is very similar to 間 (aida), but one difference is that it can also show intent. That you intentionally chose to do something during some time or take advantage of an opportunity.

  1. while/during [A] something happened

This can also express something that happened while or during a time period that is not in your control. Having a dream is something that is out of our control, so this simply expresses that the dream had happened during the period you were asleep.

17
Q

間 あいだ

A
  1. While/During
This is used when you do something the whole time during a certain period of time, so it is often paired together with words like ずっと “continuously”. Instead if you want to say something happened at one point “during” some time, use 間に (aida ni).
  2. Between
This can express the physical space between [A] and [B]. Or the time between [A] and [B].
18
Q

ながら

A
  1. While, During, Simultaneously
ながら (nagara) is used to show simultaneous actions.
    [A]ながら[B] (to do B while doing A)

It can be used to express 2 things happening at the exact same moment, or more broad.

“I watch TV while I eat” (exact time)
“I work full time while going to school” (more broad)
- It cannot be used with verbs related to time.

19
Q

What is the difference between 間 and 間に

A

間 is for doing something for the whole time during a period of time. It is often paired with ずっと。 It can also mean “between” as a physical space or between times.

間に also means that something is happening during the whole time of period of time, but it means you’re doing something with intent. Aida ni can also mean something that happened during a period of time that you had no control over.

20
Q

What is the difference between ながら and 間

A

ながら is used to show two simultaneous actions. [A]ながら[B] (to do B while doing A)

間 is for when you do something for a whole period of time or to say something happened between time or space.
