We can use either if or whether to name the options in an indirect question or report someone’s question.

We often use if in case when there are many options available, while whether is used when we have two clear options.
Examples:
I don’t know whether I should drive or take a cab.

We use only whether (NOT if) in the following
cases:
• after prepositions
• before infinitives
Examples:

(NOT: I don’t know if to go to the cinema or not.)
