Gram +ve Flashcards
What can Aerobic Gram +ve bacteria be?
Bacilli or cocci
What can Aerobic Cocci be?
Chains-Streptococci
Clusters-Staphylococci
What can aerobic Bacilli be?
Small or large
What can streptococci be?
A-haemolytic (partial haemolysis) blood->green
B-haemolytic (complete haemolysis) blood->clear
Non-haemolytic (no diff)
What can a-haemolytic streptococci be?
Streptococcus pneumoniae- (pneumonia/meningitis and septicaemia)
Viridans streptococci- diff species, normal oral flora, cause heart valve infection
What can B-haemolytic streptococci be?
Strep.Pyogens (Group A strep)-major pathogen-pharyngitis, necrotising fasciitis.
Strep.Agalactiae (Group B strep)-neonatal infections; meningitis or bacteraemia
What is Non-haemolytic streptococci?
Enterococcus spp. (Gut is normal commensal causes UTI or endocarditis)
What are the two types of Staphylococci (clusters)?
Coagulase +ve and -ve
What is coagulase +ve staphylococci?
Staphylococcus aureus-wound infections, sepsis
(penicillin resistant due to production of penicillinase)
What are coagulase negative staphylococci?
Staph epidermidis (device related infections)
What are the small aerobic bacilli?
Corneybacterium spp.
Listeria spp.
What can corneybacterium spp. be?
Corneybacterium diphtheriae (diphtheria)
Diphtheroids (skin colonisers)
What can Listeria spp be?
Listeria monocytogenes (gastroenteritis, sepsis)
What can large aerobic bacilli be?
Bacillus spp.
What can bacillus spp. be?
Bacillus cereus (food poisoning)
Bacillus anthracis (anthrax)
