Gram Positive Flashcards
Disease can be due to ingestion of preformed toxin in home-canned foods or spores in honey by an infant
Clostridium botulinum.
Symptoms include flaccid paralysis, dry mouth, diplopia, dysphagia and respiratory failure
Clostridium botulinum
Part of normal skin flora causing infections of IV lines and catheters
Staphylococcus epidermidis
Major cause of endocarditis in patients with prosthetic heart valves
Staphylococcus epidermidis
Grows white colonies. Does not produce coagulase. Does not ferment in mannitol. Does not produce Protein A
Staphylococcus epidermidis
Common cause of nosocomial infections. Often resistant to antibiotics including vancomycin
Enterococcus spp.
Common cause of UTIS, sepsis, meningitis and endocarditis
Enterococcus spp.
Major cause of pharyngitis. Can also cause suppurative infections such as erysipelas, cellulitis and impetigo
Streptococcus pyogenes. (Group A Strep)
Beta-hemolytic, bacitracin sensitive cocci.
Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Strep)
Detection with host antibodies to bacterial DNase B and anti-streptolysin O (ASO)
Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Strep)
Infection can lead to acute glomerulonephritis, mitral stenosis and aortic stenosis.
Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Strep)
Glomerulonephritis with immune complex deposition. Heart valve destruction due to autoimmune reaction by cross-reactive antibodies
