Gram negative - Treatment Flashcards
Antibiotics used for Gram negative bacteria - 7
Penicillins (Not effective), Penicillins+beta lactamase, Cephalosporin (1+2 Gen. Not effective), Cephalosporin (3+4 Gen.), Carbapnems, Aminoglycosides (Mainly UTI), Flouroquinolones.
Cephalosporin - Any good?
3rd and 4th generation are great for Gram negative
Penicillins - Any good?
isn’t very good – better when beta lactamase inhibitors are added – prevent the bac from breaking it down
Carbapenems - Any good?
Are great ! yay!
Aminoglicosides - Any good?
concentrate well in urine – used mostly for UTIs but nephrotoxic (and slightly ototoxic)
Fluoroquinolones - Any good?
very good for Gram negative, advantage: abs well via pills can be given PO
Gram negative Tx.
for a simple bac give simple antibiotic (ex. No Carbopenems since we don’t want more bacs to be resistant to them, our backup)
Pseudomonas Tx. - 3
the only Penicillin that works on it is Pipercillin (given as Pipercillin tazobactam, with inhibitor)
- Cephalosporins don’t work on it, only Ceftazidime
- Carbopenems, only Meropenem and Imipenem
