Gram negative bacteria Flashcards
What are virulence factors of gram negative bacteria?
- Colonisation factors: adhesins, invasins, nutrient acquisition, defence against the host
- Toxins (effectors): usually secreted proteins
- Damage
- Subversion
What are the 4 main groups of gram negative bacteria?
- Proteobacteria
- Bacteroids
- Chlamydia
- Spirochaetes
What shape are proteobacteria?
all are rod-shaped
What shape are bacteroids?
rod-shaped
What shape are chlamydia?
round pleimorphic
What shape are spirochaetes?
spiral/ helical
What are coliforms?
Rod-shaped aerobic gram negative bacteria
What do coliforms colonise?
intestinal tract
What is an example of a coliform?
salmonella
What are the 2 species of salmonella?
- S. enterica - responsible for salmonellosis
- S. bongori - rare (contact with reptiles)
What is helicobacter pylori?
Vibrio
aerobic gram negative rods
What is n. meningitidis?
Neisseria
aerobic gram negative cocci
What is n. gonorrhoeae?
Neisseria
aerobic gram negative cocci
How does meningococcus show asymptomatic carriage?
Nasopharyngeal carriage in 5-10% population
What are the main virulence factors in meningococcus?
Capsule
LPS (membrane ‘blebs’)
- Cytokine cascade
- Sepsis
