Grade 5 California science Unit A Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is when particles of the liquid become a gas
What is a freezing point?
A physical property. The temperature at which a substance changes from liquid to solid
What is a melting point?
A physical property. The temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid
What is the boiling point?
A physical property. The temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas.
What is the evidence of a chemical change?
Production of a gas or a solid or a color change. Also noise heat light or fizzing.
Is burning a chemical change or a physical change?
Burning is a chemical change that produces ash, carbon dioxide, and water.
What are physical changes?
Physical changes are changes in size, shape, volume, or state of matter. Matter keeps the same properties. Examples include sawing wood, shredding paper, and melting wax.
What is a decomposition reaction?
In a decomposition reaction, compound split apart to form smaller compounds.
What is a chemical equation?
A chemical equation shows what happens during a chemical reaction when a reactant is changed into a product
What are chemical changes?
Chemical changes occur when one kind of matter changes into a different kind of matter with different properties examples include cooking food for burning the candle.
What is a combination reaction?
Elements or compounds come together to form a new compound.
What is a product in a chemical reaction?
A substance made by a reaction always listed on the right side of the arrow
What is the law of conservation of mass?
Matter cannot be created or destroyed total mass of reactants equals total mass of products.
What is a reactant?
The starting materials in the chemical reaction.
What is evaporation?
When molecules of the liquid become a guess
What are the three phases or states of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas for water these are ice, liquid water, and water vapor
What is a replacement reaction?
When two or more compounds split apart and the parts switch places.
What does universal indicator paper do?
Changes colors to identify acids and bases.
What is sublimation?
When a solid turns directly into a gas. An example is dry ice becoming carbon dioxide.
