Grade 11 Review Flashcards
What is an Isotope?
An atom with the same number of protons and electrons but different number of neutrons, it has a different atomic mass
What is an Ion?
An ion is an atom with a charge
What is ionization energy?
Ionization energy is an atoms ability to gain or lose electrons
What is atomic radius?
Atomic radius is the distance between the nucleus to the outer shell of electrons
What is electronegativity?
Electronegativity is an atoms ability to attract shared electrons
What is electron affinity?
Electron affinity is the energy released or absorbed when an atom gains electrons
What are the reasons for boiling points?
Ionic compounds have a higher boiling point than covalent compounds because they have a stronger bond that is harder to break requiring more heat
What is a solvent?
A solvent is a substance that has other substances dissolved in it
What is a solute?
A solute is a substance that is present in smaller amounts in a solution
What is aqueous?
Aqueous is a solution which water is the solvent
What is Arrhenius Theory?
An acid will completely ionize in water to produce hydrogen ions, and they are molecular compounds held together by covalent bonds. A base will completely dissociate in water to produce hydroxide ions, most are made of ions because they are ionic compounds.
What makes a strong acid?
Completely ionize in water
What makes a weak acid?
Doesn’t completely ionize in water
What makes a strong base?
Will completely dissociate in water
What makes a weak base?
Doesn’t completely dissociate in water
