What was Trench foot? What was a Night raid? What was barbed wire?
Trench foot was a disease that corroded your feet because of long exposure to water in the trenches
A Night raid was when soldiers would raid the other Trench at Night so they had the tactical advantage.
Barbed wire was put in front of the trenches to slow/stop soldiers from the other trench, from entering theirs. It was also used for detecting night raids (They hung cans on the barbed wire so if someone cut it then it would make a noise alerting the enemy trench

Ross rifle-unreliable, Machine Gun-highly effective, Poison gas- effective if the wind is in your favor, telephone was introduced but not too effective, barbed wire- effective, grenades ineffective- sometimes worked sometimes didn’t, Cavalry
What where the battles of WW1 and what are 2 significant points about them
Ypres - Belgium, first use of poison gas , first battle Canadians participated in.
Somme - France, First major tank battle, First battle with the Machine Gun
Vimy Ridge - France, Considered a major Canadian Military achievement
Passchendaele - Belgium, costs the lives of thousands of soldiers, brought the morale down. Showed everyone how ineffective Trench warfare is.

A Law that gave the government extraordinary powers during the war, allowed government to send enemy aliens to interment camps

They were recognized for their contribution to the war, they were granted the right to vote shortly afterwards
What was the Treaty of Versailles?
Treaty Germany signed that says the War was Germany’s fault, Germany had to officially accept blame for the war, Germany had to Upset many Germans.

Who were the Group of seven?
A group of artists who brought artistic awareness and enthusiasm to Canada. This group all originated from Ontario, Canada. This group put Canada on the map for art because they were know for their art.
When and what was the Great depression?
Black Tuesday = October 29th 1929 the day the stock market crashed, the main cause of the great depression. Banks gave out loans to anyone who wanted one.
What were some causes of WWII?
WWII began in September 1939 when Britain & France declared war on Germany. The trigger was Germany’s invasion of Poland
Why did Hitler want to start another war?
Hitler wanted to fight back because Germany was blamed for the first war & he was upset about it. Hitler’s aggression was a significant cause of World war II

Battle of Britain = War in the air
Battle of Hong Kong = First ground war
Battle of Atlantic = Battle in the water
Battle of Dieppe = war attack on Germany occupied part of dieppe, D-Day, Juno beach US & Canada went to fight on land & water.
- Japan bombed Pearl Harbour, thus bring the US into the war. Ortona (Battle) - Canada & Germany fought against each other, fighting among small villages throughout Italy, Canada was successful: Germans retreated from Italy!
What was the Holocaust?
Hitler and the Nazis had also tried to eliminate millions of other people they considered undesirable. The attempt to destroy the Jewish race became know as the holocaust. Hitler killed about 11 million Jews, the mass killing of Jews began in the fall of 1941. In camps such as Auschwitz, prisoners were worked to death under brutal conditions .
What was the Merchant Marine?
Merchant ships sail in groups protected by an armed naval escort leaving Canada’s ad going across the Atlantic to Britain with supplies, food, weapons for the war.

A system of sending messages by holding the arms of two flags or poles in certain positions accroding to an Alpha code

Small warships designed for convoy escort

The entire Canadian Economy was geared towards creating supplies and weapons for the war.

VE day was Victory in Europe Day signaled the end of fighting in Europe after Hitler Died.
VJ Day is Victory in Japan day the official end of the WW in 1945

Capitalism (U.S.A) VS. Communism (Russia) = war of propaganda

Created after WWII, enforced peacekeeping most of the countries were involved, promoted peace around the world to prevent war. Lester B. Pearson invented Peacekeeping

After WWII, conditions were right for people to have kids in Canada, so Canada had a massive surge of babies from 1945-1965 eg: suburbia, roads,rock and roll, low unemployment
What was the Avro Arrow?
Fastest jet in the world, Diefenbacker was the one responsible for the cease in production, cancellation was controversial as thousands of Canadians lost their jobs or went to the US to work. Every piece of evidence of the Arrow was destroyed. Cancellation created tension between the US and Canada.
What was the AutoPack?
Pearson brought American automakers to Canada to make cars in Canada
One fifth of all American exports were moved to Canada, results = Creation of thousands of jobs for Canadians in the auto industry.
What was Expo 67?
Held in Montreal. The Expo 67 was a “Cultural Olympics” that also celebrated Canada’s 100th anniversary. The world came to Canada to show case food, technology and culture. The city of Montreal and Canada in general were in the spotlight.
