Q
A

Two-lens systems

For two lenses systems, when the central axes coincide:

(1) Use the thin-lens formula (1/f =1/u + 1/v) for Lens 1 and find the image position v1.

(2) Now, ignoring L1, treat v1 as u2 for L2. If this new object is located beyond L2, u2 must be taken as NEG. Otherwise, u2 is taken as POS.

(3) If the image and object are on the same side, there is a negative distance; if not, both are positive. (The opp is true for mirrors)

Q
A

Strategy:

1. Find the PE of the CM of the rod and the total KE of the rod’s CM.

2. Equate them by the conservation of energy principle to calculate the rotational-speed (omega) of rod’s CM.

3. Use v = r *omega (here r –> L) to calculate the speed the of the free end of the rod.
