gr 11, def, Newtons Laws Flashcards
normal force
force which a surface exerts on an object that is in contact with it, and is perpendicular to the surface
frictional force
force that opposes the motion of an object and acts parallel to the surface the object is in contact with
static frictional force
frictional force that opposes the tendency of motion of a stationary object relative to the surface
kinetic frictional force
frictional force that opposes the motion of an moving object relative to the surface
newtons first law of motion
an object will continue in a state of rest or uniform motion unless it is acted upon by a net external force
newtons second law of motion
when a net force is applied to an object of mas, m, the object object will accelerate in the direction of the net force. the acceleration, a, is directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object
newtons third law of motion
when object A is exerts a force on object B, object B simultaneously exerts an oppositely directed force of equal magnitude on object A
newtons law of universal gravitation
every object in the universe attracts every other object with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers
