What are the health benefits of breastfeeding for the baby? (5)

- Infections

What are the health benefits of breastfeeding for the mother? (5)
It can lower the mothers risk of:
- breast cancer
- ovarian cancer
- osteoporosis (weak bones)
- cardiovascular disease
- Obesity
What is the shared benefit of breastfeeding for both mother and baby?
Helps to build a strong bond
A breastfeeding mother comes to you, her GP, and expresses that regular pumping and feeding is taking up too much of her time. She is wanting to switch to formula.
What advice could you give?
Pump milk in advance, and when convenient. It is okay to support breastfeeding with formula feeding.
Any amount of breast feeding will have health benefits
Advice for a breastfeeding mother experiencing pain
- Alternating sides
- Creams
- Paracetamol and ibuprofen
- Check the latch position (midwives and health visitors can give advice)
What things should breast-feeding mother watch out for as they can cause pain?
- Thrush
- Blocked milk ducts
- Mastitis (inflammation of breasts)
