Obstacles and Adversities
• Originally the Joad’s believe that hard work and perseverance will lead to them achieving their dream however their experience with migration shows the realities and limitations they face
• The Joad’s face many obstacles including exploitation, low wages and deplorable living conditions
Capitalism
• Their dream of economic stability is shattered due to the realisation that the social system favours large corporations and landowners and views them as worthless
• Poverty is presented as inescapable and controlling of every aspect of their lives
‘The bank is something more than men, I tell you. It’s the monster. Men made it, but they can’t control it’
Context: Bank monster - a metaphorical monster that symbolises the oppressive forces of capitalism and the power that contributed to the suffering of the working class
Reality of the American Dream
• Steinbeck critiques the capitalist system highlighting how families like the Joad’s are systematically denied opportunities for advancement due to their place in society
