Unitary Government
a centralized government where all the powers are held by one, single, central agency.
Federal Government
one in which the powers of government are divided between a central, or national, government and several lower levels of government.
Confederate Government
an alliance of independent states that join together to give power to the central government.
Direct Democracy
a system of laws made directly by all citizens. It is one in which the will of the people is translated into public policy directly through mass meetings where citizens gather and make policy decisions
Representative Democracy
one in which representatives are chosen through elections. A small group is elected to represent the overall will of the people.
Republic
sovereign (supreme) power is held by those who are eligible to vote, while political power is exercised by representatives chosen by the citizens.
Dictatorship
can be organized as an autocracy, a government in which one person holds unlimited political power, or an oligarchy, a government in which the power is held by a small, often self-appointed elite. ALL dictatorships are authoritarian.
Tyranny
oppressive power exerted by government.
Autocracy
a form of government in which one ruler has absolute control and decision-making power.
Oligarchy
a government in which the power is held by a small, often self-appointed elite.
Presidential Government
the executive branch and the legislative branch are separate and independent from one another, but are co-equal. Elections for each branch are held separately.
Parliamentary Government
the executive and legislative are one. The legislature is chosen by the people, but the executive is chosen by the legislature
Totalitarian Government
type of government that attempts to assert total control over the lives of its citizens.
Authoritarian Government
form of government (often
referred to as a dictatorship) is one in which one or a few people hold all the power
Political Ideology
a set of beliefs, values and opinions that shape one’s views on various issues such as governance, economy, society, culture and morality.
