The government measures poverty according to the number of households whose
income is less than 60% of the national average. Using this relative definition of
poverty, statistics show that the proportion of the UK population in relative poverty is
roughly 1 in 5, about 20% of the population. Such statistics show poverty to be a persistent problem in modern Britain.
