Natural Rights
The rights you get when you are born which are life, liberty, and property.
Democracy
a form of government in which political powers are exercised by all citizens, either directly or through elected representatives.
Republic/ Representative democracy
a system of government in which people elect officials to make and administer laws for their country.
Separation of powers
the division of power between the three branches
Checks and balances
the distribution and balancing of power over the three branches so not one branch is stronger than the others.
Sovereignty
a person or group having the most power or authority in a country or state
Constitution
a set of customs, traditions, and laws that set forth the way a government is organized and operated
Ratify
to confirm and approve
Federalists
they want a strong national government (against articles of confederation)
Anti-Federalists
they want a weak national government (for the national government)
John Locke
English philosopher who wrote two treatises of government in 1689 and this book stated the natural rights of humans and explained them.

Different types of government
autocracy, democracy, oligarchy, theocracy, anarchy
Autocracy
two types called monarchy and dictatorship. Monarchy is a king or queen and family member will become in charge when one dies. Dictatorship is when one person has complete control over everything and everybody including the constitution if there is one.
Democracy
two types which are representative/ republic and direct.. Representative/ republic is when the people elect a ruler to protect their rights and interests. The leaders will do day to day work which involves considering issues, finding solutions, pass laws, and do a bunch of other things to keep the country running. Citizens hold power. Direct is when there are no representatives and citizens are involved in the day to day work.
