direct democracy
- when citizens decide on all government decisions independently (no representatives)
coalition government
- government made of up more than one party
cabinet minister
- member of the cabinet, each have different specialties (ex. environment, immigration)
civil servant
- someone who works for the government
constitution
- a set of principles and laws set by the government. Includes duties of the government and rights and freedoms.
constitutional monarchy
- a government where political power is shared between the monarch and an organized government. (ex. british parliament)
constituency
- a body of voters in a specific area who elect a representative
representative democracy
-a democracy where voters elect an official to reflect their values/views in parliament
dictatorship
- a government where one leader has complete control
electorate
- all the people in a country who are entitled to vote in an election
entrenched
- firmly established (like rights and freedoms, they can’t just go away)
executive branch
- decisions makers, implement laws. Includes the monarch (governor general), PM, and Cabinet.
federal system
- separate levels of government
first past the post
- “winner takes all”,
fixed date elections
- elections every 4 years in canada
government
- a political body that enforces laws
head of state
- representative of a country, like PM or monarch, may also be head of government

- chief officer of executive branch of gvnt (PM)
house of commons
- made up of members of parliament, they discuss bills
independent courts
- courts are separate from other branches of government so they aren’t corrupted in any way
individualist
-right wing, want less government control but more when related to personal choice (abortion, drugs)
interventionist
- left wing, want more gvnt control but less related to personal choice (drugs, abortion)
judicial branch
- judges, interpret and apply laws in court
left wing
- support equality, everyone has similar status and power
legislation
- the making and enforcement of laws by a legislative body
legislative branch
- makes laws, includes the monarch (governor general), senate. house of commons
lobby group
- a group that tries to influence decisions made by the government (ex. environment, pipeline supports)
MLA
- member of the legislative assembly, a representative elected by the voters in a constituency.
MP
- member of parliament, elected by voters to represent concerns & interests in the House of commons.
majority government
- party that wins the most seats in the house of commons, their leader becomes the PM
minority government
- when no party has a majority of seats, then they form a coalition gvnt
municipal
- a city/town’s governing body. Libraries, water, sewage, roads, parks, garbage
opposition party
-party with different beliefs than the one in power
