What is a senator and what is their role? How long are they Senators for?
Senators job is to represent their region and protect the interests and minorities of Canada. They are appointed until 75 years of age
What is a “triple E senate”?
Equal, elected, and effective. This means that people want equal representation of Senators. They want senators to be elected, not appointed.
What is the difference between popular vote and first past the post?
Popular vote: TOTAL support political parties have
Past the post: Country is divided into ridings according to population
To what extent do political and legislative processes meet
the needs of Canadians?
There are many opportunities for a citizen to express their
viewpoints. Because of this, many needs are met.
What is royal assent?
When the bill a law after being signed by the governor general.
What is the process of a bill becoming a law?
House of Commons, Senate, Royal Assent
When is the Canadian federal election?
Every five years
What is the role of political parties within Canada’s federal
political system?
A group of people who share the same ideas about how the government should respond to issues facing society today. Canadians vote for members of a political party. Whoever has the most seats becomes government.
What is the role of the media in relation to political issues?
The media depicts what is happening in the house of commons
What is the Parliamentary press gallery?
Reports who covers the decisions and actions of the government
What are lobbyists?
Lobbyists are groups of people that are hired to influence and impact their views of the government for Mp’s and government officials
How do lobbyists affect government decision making?
They impact their ideas and different perspectives. They are very good at convincing Mp’s to vote on something that could benefit or hurt them
Do Canadians have a say in the creation of laws? If no, why? If yes,
how?
Yes. We may be part of a committee that is reviewing a bill. Also, we
can contact our MP who does the voting on bills.
What is the relationship with the media, citizens, and government?
The media informs the citizens what is going on in the world and tells the government when citizens are unhappy with them
