What are the levels of government?
Local, state and federal
What is an electorate ?
All people in a geographical area in a country who are entitled to vote in an election for a member of parliament. Electorates are represented by a House of Representatives member that has been voted in by a majority of voters in that area
What are the Houses of Parliament at federal level?
Upper house - senate
Lower house - House of Representatives
What is a referendum ?
A change in the constitution
When did federation occur?
1st January 1901
What is a prime minister?
The leader of a political party that has government
What is a government?
A political party that has been voted in to govern a country by a majority plus one
What is a constitutional monarchy??
A form of government in which a king or queen acts as a head of state
What is a minister?
A member of parliament that has an area of responsibility
What is a cabinet?
Ministers of government chosen by the prime minister.
What are the houses at state level?
Upper house- legislative council
Lower house - legislative assembly
How many seats are allocated in each house at federal level?
150- lower house
76- upper house
How many seats are allocated in each house at state level?
Upper house - 40
Lower house - 88
What are the regulations applied to voting in an election?
- you must be 18 years or older
- you must be an Australian citizen
- you must be enrolled in the system to vote
