Relationship between Executive and Legislative
Presidential: Exec. And Leg. Are separate
Parliamentary: Exec. is part of Leg. (Prime minister)
Types of democracy?
Direct: citizens vote directly to the government for the leader.
Republic: elected officials vote to the government on the leader for the citizens.
Geographic placement of power
Unitary: all gov’t is ran out of one area.
Federal: main government with the most power in one area with smaller weaker gov’t spread around.
What is a government
The institution in which society makes and enforces public policies
What is a confederation
An alliance of free states
What are the governments 3 powers
Legislative: Make the laws
Executive: Execute, enforce, and administer laws
Judicial: Interpret and settle disputes regarding laws.
Types of dictation
Autocracy: Single person with all the power (monarchy)
Oligarchy: Power within small group of usually self appointed people (communism)
What are public policies
All of the things that the gov’t decides to do
What makes a nation
Population, territory, sovereignty, and government
Types of government
Democracy: vote for a leader
Dictatorship: one person with all the power
Origins of government
Force theory: enforce with power
Evolution: gov’t formed out of a family structure
Divine right: god given (queen/king)
Social contract: gov’t gets power from people
