Oligarchy
A government that recognizes God or a divine being as the ultimate authority.
Theocracy
A government in which one person has all the power.
Autocracy
A king or queen rules the country.
Monarchy
A form of government where one leader has absolute control over citizens’ lives.
Dictatorship
Citizens’ hold the political power.
Democracy
Citizens elect leaders to represent their rights and interests in government.
Representative democracy
There are no representatives. Citizens are directly involved in the day-to-day work of governing the country.
Direct democracy
When a monarchy and a democracy work together.
Constitutional monarchy
A system in which the power is held by the people and their representatives.
Republic
A body of people living in a defined space, with the power to make and enforce laws, and with the organization to do this.
State
The group of people who are the members or citizens of a state.
Population
The area in which a state’s rule applies.
Territory
The ability to rule absolutely within a territory.
