Autocracy
One person is in power.
Monarchy
The King or Queen inherits their power and position through their family.
Absolute Monarchy
The monarch holds total control over the country.
Constitutional Monarchy
The monarch holds some power, but it’s restricted by a Constitution.
Dictatorship
The dictator or ruler is the sole authority over the country. Often oppressive and stifling the rights of their citizens.
Theocracy
Theocracy is a government run by religious doctrine. Theo comes from Greek for god.
Oligarchy
A small group of people is in charge. For example members of a certain social class or descendants of a few families or a few heads of certain businesses.
Democracy
Government in which the power is given to the people. “rule by the people.”
Direct democracy
when every citizen is given an equal vote and all important decision are made all together.
Indirect Democracy
Representative or indirect democracy is modeled after the Ancient Roman Republic. Most modern democratic governments practice this type of representative democracy or republic.
Representative Democracy
where citizens vote for lawmakers to represent their interests - also called an indirect democracy.
Constitutional Republic
another term for a representative democracy. The United States is this type of government.
Anarchy
No one is in charge. No countries currently exist in an anarchist state, and there has never been an attempted anarchy in history that proved long-lasting and successful.
What are the roles of government?
To make and enforce laws, protect people and to provide services.
What 3 powers do all governments have?
Make laws, Enforce laws, Judiciary power (courts)
