Nation-State
A country is ethnically the same. Example: Japan
Democracy
Ruled by the people. Example: U.S.
Direct Democracy
The people make all the important decisions. Example: Ancient Greece
Indirect Democracy
Citizens choose lawmakers to represent their interests in government. Example: U.S.
Republic
Vote for someone to represent us in government. Example: U.S.
Theocracy
A government run by religious doctrine. Example: Vatican City
Oligarchy
A small group is in charge. Example: Saudi Arabia
Dictatorship
The dictator is the sole ruler over their people. Example: The Kim Family
Totalitarian
One political party is in power, and people are forced to do what the government tells them.
Presidential democracy
You vote for your country’s leader and the legislature.
Parliamentary democracy
You only vote for your legislature. Then the voted representatives choose a Prime Minister.
Absolute monarchy
The monarch holds total control over the country.
Constitutional monarchy
The monarch holds some power, but is restricted by a constitution. Example: England
Anarchy
No one rules.
Government
A group of people who control the country.
What are roles of government?
To make and enforce laws, protect people and to provide public services.
What three powers do all governments have?
Make laws, enforce laws and judiciary power (alter laws)
