What is Political Culture ?
The essence of political culture is not agreement on issues but common perception of the rights and obligations of citizenship and of the rules for participating in the political process
What are the 3 main Political Factors?
1] Awareness of government
2] Expectations of government
3] Political participation
Three types of political culture
1] Parochial cultures [low awareness, expectations and participation] e.g. Mexico
2] Subject culture [high levels of awareness and expectation but low participation] e.g. Italy and Germany
3] Participatory [high levels of all three] e.g. USA & UK
What are the 3 types of congruence?
1) High congruence = allegiance ( strong support and loyalty to the system.)
2) Weak congruence = apathy (system only partly fits people’s values, people are uninterested or don’t care about politics.)
3) Incongruence = alienation (system and people’s beliefs clash, people feel rejected, powerless, or angry.)
What are the 3 different dimensions of Political Culture ?
- The way in which people define themselves. (according to their island identity)
- The extent of attachment to a national identity (Locals being proud and return of diasporas )
- The basis of that attachment (Pride in identity doesnt come from politics but culture)
What are 2 qualities that define the leader-follower relationship?
1) Deference- followers respect and accept the authority of the leader
2) Egalitarianism -the belief that all people are equal, so leaders and followers should be treated similarly. (Common in democratic or participatory cultures.)
What are the 3 types of leadership in Deference?
1) Charismatic leader is one who regards himself or herself as a saviour. Has gift of speech and outgoing. (Michael Manley- Jamaica)
2) Paternalist leader someone who needs to be given total obedience and total respect. (Eric Williams T&T)
3) Managerialist leader superior and all-knowing. Disagreeing is rare and often punished. (Owen Arthur -Barbados)

What is Political Socialization ?
The learning of political values and factual assumptions about politics. Through political socialization, people understand, accept, and usually approve and support the existing political system.
What are the agents of Political Socialization?
Setting and the Speaker.
Indirect- Family Values
Indirect - School friends
Indirect- Peer Groups
Direct - School molding to the ideals of the state.
Indirect- Mass Media
Indirect- Socio-Demographic
What are the categories of Agents of Socialization ?
Primary Group- Individual has regular face-to-face interactions [e.g. family, friends, and work associates]
Secondary Group- tend to be more large-scale and diffuse [e.g. religious, civic, and professional associations]
