1] Parochial cultures [low awareness, expectations and participation] e.g. Mexico
2] Subject culture [high levels of awareness and expectation but low participation] e.g. Italy and Germany
3] Participatory [high levels of all three] e.g. USA & UK

What are the 3 types of congruence?

A

1) High congruence = allegiance ( strong support and loyalty to the system.)
2) Weak congruence = apathy (system only partly fits people’s values, people are uninterested or don’t care about politics.)
3) Incongruence = alienation (system and people’s beliefs clash, people feel rejected, powerless, or angry.)

  1. The way in which people define themselves. (according to their island identity)
  2. The extent of attachment to a national identity (Locals being proud and return of diasporas )
  3. The basis of that attachment (Pride in identity doesnt come from politics but culture)

What are 2 qualities that define the leader-follower relationship?

A

1) Deference- followers respect and accept the authority of the leader
2) Egalitarianism -the belief that all people are equal, so leaders and followers should be treated similarly. (Common in democratic or participatory cultures.)

A

1) Charismatic leader is one who regards himself or herself as a saviour. Has gift of speech and outgoing. (Michael Manley- Jamaica)
2) Paternalist leader someone who needs to be given total obedience and total respect. (Eric Williams T&T)
3) Managerialist leader superior and all-knowing. Disagreeing is rare and often punished. (Owen Arthur -Barbados)
