Presidential government
Separate executive and legislative branches that are equal. Legislative makes the laws and executive branch carries those out. Checks and balances
Parliamentary government
Executive branch = prime minister and cabinet. Elected through parliament. Fewer disagreements but no checks and balances
Magna Carta
1215 - limits the king’s power and provides due process and the rule of law
Petition of Rights
1928 - establishes that the king is not above the law. No punishment without peer agreement, no army during peace time, no quartering of soldiers, not taxes without parliament agreement
English Bill of Rights
Right to a trial, free from excessive bails or fines, freedom of speech in parliament, right to keep arms, petition the government, and no standing army during times of peace, parliament makes laws.
Articles of Confederation
Loose agreement between the states, with no central government. States were in charge of making laws and protecting their people. Second Continental Congress in 1775
What does congress do
Decides matters of war and peace Send and receive ambassadors Enter into treaties Borrow money Coin or create money Build a navy Raise an army by asking states for troops Measurements and weights Settle disputes amongst states
Weaknesses of Articles of Confederation
No taxing power - no money No national executive - lack of law enforcement Unicameral legislature - no balance No judicial/national court No checks and balances No regulation of commerce No power to maintain army Government dominated by states Need 9/13 to pass laws and unanimous to make an amendment. Impossible to accomplish anything

Supported contract between people and government. Not necessarily democracy
Thomas Hobbes
Philosopher who thought that people were too emotional to survive without a government.
Liaises faire economy
Letting the economy play out for itself without government intervention
