- Diuretics including Hydrochlorothiazide and furosemide

What is the treatment for acute gout attacks?
Ibuprofen

- CVS: Hypertension and heart failure
- Resp: Asthma
- GIT: Peptic Ulcer disease
- Kidney: Chronic kidney disease
Indications for allopurinol[5]
- Serum urate>0.5
- Frequent acute attacks
:at least 2 times per year - Chronic tophaceous gout
- Complications: Kidney stones and kidney disease
Who needs lower doses of allopurinol?
Elderly or people with eGFR<60
What should be suspected if a patient with BMI<18.5 OR younger than 40 present with gout?
Malignancy especially myeloproliferative disorders
What are other triggers of acute gout flares except for medications?[4]
- High purine foods: meat, seafood and offal
- Drinks: Beers, sweetened fizzy drinks and red wine
- Fasting and dehydration
What is the initial test for gout?
Joint aspiration which shows needle shaped negatively birefringence
