Style originated in France and spread over the whole Western Europe. Outgrowth elaboration of the Romanesque, characterized by use of pointed arch, buttress, tracery, and large windows. Structure dominated by balancing thrust and counterthrust. Dominance of vertical line.Oak used for woodwork and furniture. Furniture designs borrowed from architectural form.

CASTLE FLOOR PLAN: ALL CASTLES HAD A MOAT(DITCH). FIXED BRIDGE, DRAW BRIDGE. ALL OUTSIDE WALL KNOWN AS CUTAIN WALL ANYWHERE FROM 8-20 FT THICK. BUILDING FOR DEFENSIVE REASONS. HIGH TOWERS TO SEE A LONG DISTANCE. OUR FOCUS WILL BE ON THE KEEP - IT IS WHERE THE PEOPLE LIVED. LOCATED ON HIGHEST POINT TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE. MOST SECURE PLACE WITHIN COMPOUND.

CASTLE PROBLEMS

A

ROOMS POORLY VENTALATED, ONLY HEAT SOURCE WAS FIRE PLACE, GOT VERY VERY COLD IN THE WINTERTIME. WOOL GARMENTS. IN SUMMERTIME DUE TO COLD WET WEATHER, THEY WERE DAMP AND CHILLY INSIDE.

A

IN KEEP. BEAMS COLORFULLY PAINTED TO PROVIDE INTEREST. FLOORS MADE OF STONE, POSSIBLY BRICK AND SOMETIMES TILE. ON TOP THEY WOULD PUT STRAW OR LOOSE GRASS/LEAVES TO SERVE AS BEDDING FOR ANIMALS IF UNDER ATTACK. SORT OF LIKE THE ALL PURPOSE ROOM. TABLES AGAINST WALLS BROUGHT OUT TO MIDDLE OF ROOM TO EAT. PUSHED UP AGAINST WALL AT NIGHT TO ALLOW FOR EXTRA SLEEPING SPACE. MINSTREL GALLERY: OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE MINSTRAL GALLERY IS A STAGE OF PLATFORM CALLED A DAIS - RESERVED FOR LORD AND LADY OF THE MANER. TYPICALLY TWO THRONE LIKE CHAIRS.
