Recall the story of the Roman trial (5)
12 points
(Mark 15: 1-20)

A
  • The chief priests, elders, teachers of the law, and the whole Sanhedrin met very early in the morning and made their plans. They bound Jesus and handed him over to Pilate.
  • “Are you the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked.
    “So you say,” Jesus answered.
  • The chief priests accused Jesus of many things, without answer.
“Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
  • Still, there was no reply, to which Pilate was amazed.
  • The tradition at the festival of the Passover was to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man named Barabbas was in prison for committing murder in a riot.
  • When the crowd gathered, Pilate asked them, “Do you want me to set free for you the king of the Jews?” He knew that the chief priests handed Jesus over out of jealousy.
  • But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask for Barabbas to be set free, so Pilate asked, “What, then, do you want me to do with the one you call the king of the Jews?”
  • The crowd shouted, “Crucify him!
-“ Pilate replied, “But what crime has he committed?” But the crowd shouted louder, “Crucify him!”
  • Pilate wanted to please the crowd so he set Barabbas free and handed Jesus over to be whipped and crucified.
  • The soldiers took Jesus inside to the courtyard of the governor’s palace.
  • They put a purple robe on Jesus and made a crown out of thorny branches which was placed on his head. They mocked him “Long live the King of the Jews!”, beat him over the head with a stick, spat on him, and bowed down to him.
  • When they had finished, they put his own clothes back on and let him out to be crucified.

  • “Do people gain anything if they win the whole world but lose their life? Of course not! There is nothing they can give to regain their life.”

  • Again, Peter denied this.
  • A while later, the bystanders accused him again, “You can’t deny that you are one of them, because you, too, are from Galilee.
  • Peter then said, “I swear that I am telling the truth! May God punish me if I am not! I do not know the man you are talking about!
  • Just then, a cock crowed a second time, and Peter broke down and cried because Jesus had said to him, “Before the cock crows twice, you will say three times that you do not know me.”
