Q

Stevenson uses the character of Hyde to criticise victorian’s society’s tendency to conflate one’s physical deformity with thier inner moral corruption. Despite Hyde’s internal evil, Stevenson presents society to hold immedate prejudice towards him based on his appearence, making his contemporary audience wonder whether those with deformities are morally evil by nature, or that by treating them as such they are forced become evil? Influenced by phronology (widely accepted pseudoscientific belief) and the popularity of human circuses including individuals such as Joseph Merrick (Elephant man), Stevenson highlights society’s cruel tendency to ostricise those with deformities, demonstrating that true evil lies not in deformity, but in the moral blindness of those who judge by it.

  • “impression of deformity… “Loathing, disgust and fear” chpt 2
