Good Friday Flashcards
What is Good Friday?
A Christian holiday, commemorating the day Jesus was crucified
What is the setting?
A bus in Glasgow
What are the themes/messages?
religion, religious holidays are now more for showing our loved ones we care rather than worship
How would you describe the man’s personality?
working class, uneducated, annoying, harmless, family man
How do we know the man is harmless?
he obviously cares about his children, he complements Edwin Morgan, he asks Morgan if he is being annoying
How do we know the man is drunk?
his speech is slurred “d’s this go - “, lots of dashes to show he is not speaking fluently, he says “I’ve had a wee drink”, his movements are unsteady (“lurches”, “flops”)
“– I don’t say it’s right
I’m no saying it’s right, ye understand - ye understand?”
repetition shows he is keen to get his point across but knows he is not communicating clearly. Dashes show his speech is not fluent.
“I’m no boring you, eh?”
he doesn’t want to be a bother
“I don’t know what today’s in aid of,
whether Christ was – crucified or was he –
rose fae the dead like, see what I mean?”
Shows that people are not religious any more. dashes show that he is not speaking fluently, because he is drunk and also confused.
“You’re an educatit man, you can tell me – “
he compliments Morgan while also admitting his own lack of education
which subjects does the man converse about?
where the bus goes, the meaning of good Friday, his shopping trip for Easter eggs, the lack of education of the working class.
“the working man
has nae education, he jist canny – jist
hasny got it, know what I mean,
he’s jist bliddy ignorant”
Use of accent and dialect throughout shows the man is working class and Glaswegian. This helps us relate to him.
which words emphasise the unsteady movement of the man and the bus?
man - nearly steady legs, lunges, swings, flops
bus - violently, lurches
Which street is mentioned? Why did Morgan mention it by name?
Bath St. So that we can relate to it and picture it more easily as it is well known.
“I’ve got to get some Easter Eggs for the kiddies”
he buys Easter eggs because he loves his children, not because he is religious
