Good And Evil (Catholics) Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Catholic Response to the problem of Evil

A

• Free will- humans have been given the gift of free will from God and when they abuse this gift by making bad choices (choosing evil) this results in suffering.

• Original sin - The Fall (when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit) paved the way for natural suffering and pain to be brought into the world- since that time all humans are born with the tendency to go against God (original sin)

Q

What three answers did St Augustine give to question of suffering

A

In the Enchiridion , he answers the questions saying :

• the existence of Evil helps people to appreciate the good in the world

• evil is just the absence of good things therefore God does not cause or permit evil because evil is not even a thing

• God allows suffering because he is omnipotent and good. In his goodness he is always able to bring a greater good out of suffering
