Q

What is the story of the pharisee and the tax collector:

A

9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Q

Who is considered good?

A

The Pharisee is considered good by others
In the community because of his role in society but the reality of the story is that the Pharisee may look good be cause of his role but his arrogance gets the best of him unlike the tax collector who is willing to admit he has done wrong and then ask for redemption and apologise for his actions so the real good in the story was the tax collector and him being able take responsibility for his actions.

Q

Who is considered evil?

A

During these times tax collectors were ruthless and money hungry and their presence in society was seen as evil as they would make people give all their earnings to them but in this case the tax collector has admitted his sins and asks for redemption unlike the Pharisee who is just expected to have the image of good because he is a Pharisee but God does not view people like that he views them on their actions and how they are.
