golgi apparatus Flashcards
1
Q
structure
A
similer to ser but more compact. consists of a stack of membranes that make up flattened sacks, cisternae, with small rounded hollow structures called vesicles.
2
Q
how it works
A
the proteins and lipids produced by the er are passed through the g.a in strict sequence. the g.a modifies these proteins often adding non-protein components, eg. carbohydrate, to them. it also ‘labels’ them so they are sent to the correct destinations.
3
Q
functions
A
- add carbohydrates to proteins to form glycoproteins
- produce secretory enzymes, eg. those secreted by the pancreas
- secrete carbohydrates, eg. those used in making cell walls in plants
- transport, modify and store lipids
- form lysosomes
4
Q
especially well developed where
A
in secretory cells, eg. epithelial cells that line the intestines
