Why do we treat subjects joined by an “and” to be plural while subjects joined by an additive phrase to be “singular”
When we join two subjects using “and” we put equal emphasis on both the entities.
When joined by “And”
- emphasis is equal on both the entities
- equally responsible for the action
When joined by an additive phrase
- “A as well as B” - afterthought that adds more info to the main subject - A
- A was primarily responsible for the action
Are the below phrases singular or plural
- One of the
- Each as subject
- Each and Every before the subject
- Subjects ending in -one, -body, -thing
Each of the items mentioned here is treated as singular
