Q

Pop art

A

Goings was influenced by pop art as both shared an interest in mass media imagery and American material culture. In pie with ice tea, Goings uses mass produced items such as ketchup bottle and set his still life in a diner not a traditional studio. However, although Goings was influenced by pop art he is not a pop art, and his work lacks the cynicism of pop art

Q

Photography

A

Photography influenced Goings as he enjoyed translating a photograph into another media by projecting and tracing the image instead of painting the objects directly in front of him. This went against the belief of many other artists at the time, however, Goings demonstrated that he wasn’t simply copying but he was using his own artistic talent to evoke a particular mood and atmosphere as seen in pie with ice tea
