Goals of Orthodontics Flashcards
Timely diagnosis, prevention, and correction (within the patients anatomic limitations) of dental, jaw, and muscular irregularities responsible for the patients malocclusion
The General Goal of Orthodontics
Specific Goals (7)
- Advising patients of preventable etiologic agents of Malocclusion
- Aligning Teeth
- Aligning facial skeletal structures
- improving dental and facial esthetics
- improving dental function
- improving comfort during dental function
- improving long term dental and periodontal health
Optimum Occlusion Criteria (3)
- Stable contract on all teeth in centric relation [CR=Condyles in hinge axis position] which generally implies class 1 molar and cuspid relationship and ideal overbite and overjet
- Dental function in harmony with the normal rand of function of the temporomandibular joints
- No occlusal interferences with protrusive or lateral jaw movements
Limitations to achieving optimum occlusion
Tooth size discrepancies (“peg” lateral) Certain combination of extractions (maxi alley premolars extracted can results in a class 2 molar relationship)
Improving alignment orthopaedically (ex: growth modification, appliances and techniques) as an alternative to orthognathic (jaw) surgery if possible
Goals in Jaw Alignment
Producing alignment that is in harmony with the individual patients esthetics and function
Goals in Jaw Alignment
__________ is required to prevent/minimize relapse
Patient cooperation
_______,_________,________ may relapse
Dental, Orthopaedtic, and Surgical corrections
