Go Flashcards
What is weather
Weather is the day to day changes in the atmosphere
What is climate
Climate is the overall pattern of weather, usually based on an average over 30 years
Types of weather
Windy, cloudy, stormy, snowy, rainy…..
What varies the weather
Temperature Wind speed Wind direction Air pressure Sunshine Cloud cover Humidity Precipitation
The world can be divided up according to……
Climatic Zones
Why does it rain
Water turns into water vapour, then it cools down and turns into water droplets and they join together and when they are heavy enough it can rain
How many types of rain is there
3
What are the types of rain
Convectional
Frontal
Relief
Convectional
1) The sun heats the land
2) The hot land heats the air then rises
3) Rising air cools and condenses to form clouds which build up and it then rains
Relief
1) Warm moist air is being blown in from the sea
2) Air is forced up by higher land. As the air rises it cools
3) The air cools and starts to condense to form clouds
Frontal
1) As the warm air meets colder air it rises up over it
2) Cooling and condensing to form clouds and rain
What are Climate Graphs
Climate graphs are a way of showing how temperature and precipitation vary through the year for a particular place
Factors that affect climate
Latitude, Distance from the coast, Wind direction, Ocean Currents, Altitude, Shelter, Hoe built up a place is
Wind speed
Measured using an anemometer, given in mph, it is the strengths of the wind
Wind direction
Measured using a wind vane, given in compass directions, it is the direction the wind is blowing from
Rainfall
Measured using a rain gauge, given in liters and millimeters cubed, it is the amount of precipitation falling in a given area
Temperature
Measured using a thermometer, given in degrees Celsius, it is how hot or cold something is
Air pressure
Measured using a barometer, given in millibars, it is the amount of force of the air on the ground
Humidity
Measured using a hydrometer, given in percentage, it is the amount of water vapour in the air
Cloud Cover
Measured using observation , given in oktas, it is a mass of cloud all or most of the sky
Microclimate
A microclimate is the climate of a small area that is different from the area around it.
