GMAW Flashcards
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
An arc welding process that uses an arc between a continuous wire electrode and the weld pool
Metal Transfer
The manner in which molten metal transfers from the end of the electrode across the welding arc to the weld pool
What are the different modes of metal transfer?
Short circuit transfer, globular transfer, spray transfer, pulsed spray transfer (variation of spray transfer)
What is a disadvantage to using GMAW?
The process is less portable than SMAW because of the external shielding gas and is not suited for outdoor applications due to shielding gas getting blown away
Which polarity is commonly used for GMAW?
DCEP
What are the advantages to using DCEP?
Deep penetration and excellent cleaning action
What kind of power source does GMAW use?
A direct current (DC) machine capable of producing constant voltage (CV) throughout arc length changes
What does MIG stand for?
Metal Inert Gas
What are the advantages to using GMAW?
Fast travel speeds, no slag, high deposition rates
