Q

How do we find q1 and q3 with even numbers?

A
  • We spilt the data set into half
  • Find the average of the data sets that you split.

Q

How do we find q1 and q3 with odd numbers?

A
  • Find the median of the entire data set
  • Cross out the median
  • Split the data set
  • find the median of the data sets separately.

Q

How to comment on the Centre of a graph?

A

We comment on the mean and median.
- Mean= (Sum of data values)/(number of data values)
- Median = n+1/2 (- If it is a number like 5.5, then you take the average of numbers in positions 5 &6.)

Q

How to comment on the shape of a graph?

A
  • Symmetrical: The peak is at the Centre and the distribution is at a bell curve shape.
  • Positively skewed: The tail of the graph stretches towards the right ( in the positive direction of the x-axis).
  • Negatively skewed: The tail of the graph stretches towards the left ( in the negative direction of the x-axis).

What do we need to include in a box-plot/ describe the step by

EDITTTT LATERRRR

A

First we calculate the outliers:
Lower fence=q1-1.5 x IQR
Upper fence =q3+1.5 x IQR

  • If minimum value is 4, and the outlier for the lower fence = -1.5, then -1.5 is the outlier.
  • If maximum Value is 21 and outlier is 14, then 21 is the outlier and 14

Q

What does standard deviation tell us?

A

It tells us how spread out our data is in relation to the mean.

14
Q

Formula for standard deviation?

A

s=√Σ ( x - x̄)^2/n-1

  • Σ ( x - x̄)^2 : Sum of ( x - x̄)^2
  • x: is the data point
  • x̄: mean of the data set.
  • n: is the no of data points we have.
15
Q

What does the (68-95-99.7) rule mean?

A

68% of the data lies between One standard deviation of the mean.

95% of the data lies between Two standard deviations of the mean.

99.7% of the data lies between Three standard deviations of the mean.
